Why are we, he asks, so suspicious of items which are too gentle, too non-stop? What makes us consider, once we glance upon a fraction, that its very incompletion has a type of which means in itself? Is it that our event in the world is inherently discontinuous, or that we're easily not able to think in something whole?
Harbison publications us via ruins and fragments, either old and sleek, visible and textual, displaying us how they're the most important to knowing our present approach and the way we arrived right here. Example text

The final form of Agee’s and Evans’s book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, a strange and in some way furiously inapposite title, put a sheaf of Evans’s photographs, uncaptioned and unexplained, in front of Agee’s text, the two parts juxtaposed not integrated, set against each other in a special inarticulacy. So throughout the verbally extravagant text there is always the sensation of words crucially missing and withheld, of a text that wants to burst on you without preparatory explanation. The ideal, to which it stays true a surprising amount of the time, is immersion in an overpowering welter of detail, and that is how he renders lives beautiful in their ruin, and because they are ruined.

An early name for The Waste Land was ‘He Do the Police in Different Voices’, which must have meant something very different to Eliot from what it calls up for most readers. The poem is an extended act of ventriloquism, a sequence of different voices that follow each other uncannily, the gaps between sometimes bridged by vaguer, more vatic passages that call the solidity of the rest in question. These intervals are full of mysterious deaths and magical interventions, music like an elusive being or the sea drowning out human sounds.

The plan to find a sharecropper family in one of the poorest Southern states and to convey what their life was like, seen in closest proximity, could have ended in a standard sort of sociological reportage. James Agee’s roots in the South made him a likely candidate to undertake this. The result was meant to be a single article that would run in a high-class business magazine not known for radical sympathies or poetical excursions. The idea would have been more at home in the wpa Writers’ Programme, but Agee may have hoped to jump that boundary to reach a different, wider audience.
