Perhaps the earliest example of a discrepancy between attitudes and the corresponding behaviour was demonstrated by Robert LaPiere in a study done in the 1930s. Over a two-year period LaPiere (1934), together with a young Chinese couple, stayed in 66 hotels and other types of accom modation, and ate in 1 84 restaurants in the USA. At that time there was considerable prejudice against Chinese, yet on only one occasion were they refused service. Following his experiences, LaPiere sent a questionnaire to all the places they had visited, asking if they were prepared to serve Chinese.
