There have been many explanations for this “repetition compulsion” over the years, one of the most prominent being Goulding and Goulding (1978) who talk about early decisions.

For example, if a child is repeatedly neglected, the Little Professor has to decide if it is OK or not OK, and if others are OK or not OK. The Little Professor will make a decision as to the worth of self and others. Unfortunately, the Little Professor does not think in the grown-up logical way of the Adult ego state, and therefore the child can come to some odd and even bizarre conclusions.

It is the defining factor in the suicidal person.
